Galaxy Science Fiction

Galaxy Science Fiction was one of the most influential American science fiction magazines of the 20th century, first published in 1950. It played a major role in shaping modern sci-fi by focusing less on space opera adventure and more on social commentary, satire, and “what if” ideas about future societies.

The magazine became known for publishing some of the genre’s biggest names, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Robert A. Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, and Frederik Pohl (who also served as editor for a period). Under Pohl’s editorial direction, Galaxy leaned into intelligent, often ironic storytelling that explored economics, politics, psychology, and everyday life in futuristic settings.

Unlike pulp-era magazines that emphasized action and heroism, Galaxy helped define “social science fiction”—stories where the real focus is how technology and progress reshape human behavior and culture.
