The Black Beast

The Black Beast is the fourth novel in Nancy Springer’s Book of Isle fantasy series, a darker and more emotionally intense story that combines political conflict, grief, and mythic adventure. The novel follows two princes, Tirell and Frain, as they journey through mysterious lands in search of hope against a spreading evil that threatens their kingdom.

After the loss of the woman he loved, Prince Tirell is consumed by anger and revenge, while his younger brother Frain, a healer, struggles to guide him through a world filled with danger, gods, and hidden forces. As darkness spreads across the realm of Melior, the brothers must confront not only the evil surrounding them, but also the darkness growing within themselves.

Unlike straightforward action fantasy, the novel leans heavily into emotion, atmosphere, and themes of love, loss, hatred, and redemption.
